Louisville Lacrosse Among the Nation's Best Statistically in 2008
May 29, 2008
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville lacrosse team closed the program's inaugural season among the nation's best statistically as the Cards had the nation's top goal scorer and were among the top 10 nationally in five team categories. Leading the way for the Cards, which closed the season with five straight wins and a 12-4 record overall, was first-year attacker Bergan Foley, who led the nation in goals per game with 4.07 per contest. A native of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., Foley had a school record and career best seven goals in the Cards' win over Connecticut on April 12. "Bergan's performance this spring was remarkable," said Cards' head coach Kellie Young. "She attacked the cage against each opponent and embraced her responsibility to put the ball in the back of the net. Still, I am most impressed by her daily preparation. She led the country in goals per game because she worked on her finishing each and every week this spring. Continued diligence will make her an offensive force in the BIG EAST Conference in 2009." Joining Foley among the nation's top players in 2008 was first-year midfielder Emily Dashiell, who ranked 11th nationally in draw controls with 3.38 per game. A native of Salisbury, Md., Dashiell had a career-best seven draw controls against LaSalle on March 9 and again on March 14 against Rutgers. "Emily's expertise on the draw gave us chance after chance to win games," said Young. "Her possession put Louisville on the offensive rather than the defensive and gave our attackers an opportunity to do what they do so well. She will only get better as she not only gets stronger and faster, but as she learns to study the draw and evaluate her opponents on game day." As a team, the Cards ranked fifth in the nation in scoring offense with 15.17 goals per game and fifth nationally in draw controls with 15.06 per contest. Louisville, which will begin BIG EAST Conference membership in 2009, was also sixth in scoring margin at +5.44, seventh in caused turnovers with 10.75 per game and ninth in win percentage by winning 75 percent of its games in 2008.
"I am incredibly proud of these student-athletes," Young said. "As a staff, we get very focused on hard work, preparation and strategy, and we rarely check in to the national scene to see where we are in comparison. These rankings show that in just one year of competition, we are able to compete in Division I. Our young women are driven to succeed and will, I am sure, continue to work to make Louisville proud." Following the season-ending 20-4 win at Howard on May 4, the Louisville players elected not to award individual honors in recognition of the commitment everyone made to the first year of the Cards' lacrosse program. The returning players also voted goalkeeper Jen Heup and defender Jamie Ward as team captains for the second straight year. Heup, a native of Davidsonville, Md., will be a senior in 2009, while Ward, from Ellicott City, Md., will be a sophomore next season. |
